How to clean a yoga mat

Basic Info
1. Soak the yoga mat. Use warm water and mild cleaning agents such as dishwashing detergent to form a solvent. Soak the yoga mat in the bathtub for a few minutes. This helps to remove dirt, grease, and odors.
2. Hand wash the yoga mat with a soft cloth. After soaking for a few minutes, clean both sides of the yoga mat with a soft cloth. When scrubbing, be thorough and pay attention to the areas where hands and feet are most in contact.
3. Rinse the yoga mat with clean water. Drain the water soaked in the yoga mat in the bathtub and rinse with clean water to remove the washed yoga mat. This can rinse off any residue from the cleaning products on the mat and minimize the risk of the yoga mat becoming slippery.
4. Remove excess water from the yoga mat. Shake the yoga mat and shake off the surface water. Spread the yoga mat flat on a dry towel, then roll them together and squeeze out any remaining water.
5. Hang the yoga mat to dry. After squeezing out excess water, spread out the yoga mat on a towel and hang it to dry thoroughly.
Taking advantage of the gradually warming weather, many people have started to regain the habit of exercising and fitness, especially the various yoga projects that are easy to get started with. But you know what? According to a study by a professor at Rutgers University School of Medicine in the United States, yoga mats are actually a super large breeding ground for bacteria. Due to excessive sweating during exercise, yoga mats are covered in sweat, oil stains, and mixed with various dandruff, which can easily lead to the growth of bacteria and mold on the surface of yoga mats, making it easy for skin inflammation or allergic reactions. To prevent people from accidentally turning into acne, today we will tell you 5 precautions for cleaning yoga mats!

Wash once a week

I believe many people are eager to put the yoga mat in a bag after class and leave it in a dark place at home, waiting for the next class to take it out. Take the time to develop a good habit and thoroughly clean the yoga mat every week, so that you can bring a brand new and fragrant yoga mat to class every week and stay away from various bad bacteria that may cause skin lesions!

Disinfect tissues or spray alcohol

Many people are used to disinfecting the yoga mat before using it, but should they choose the convenient and commercially available disinfecting wipes to wipe, or should they spray the yoga mat surface with alcohol spray and then wipe it with cloth or toilet paper? It is recommended that everyone choose the latter and wipe it as soon as possible after spraying alcohol to accelerate evaporation. Try to avoid various disinfectants remaining on the surface of the yoga mat for a long time, and prevent the opportunity for chemical agents to accelerate the aging and decomposition of the yoga mat.

Do not use the washing machine

If you want to clean a yoga mat, don't throw it into the washing machine or dryer just because of laziness. Most yoga mats on the market cannot withstand high torque rotation and high temperature heating, which not only damages the mats but also may damage the washing and drying machines.

Soak and wipe

Since you can't throw away the washing machine, how should you wash it? Actually, washing yoga mats is very simple. Just soak them in warm water. If you want to enhance the cleaning effect, you can pour some laundry detergent and detergent in water that does not contain bleaching, softening, or other additives, and create a small vortex in the water to let the water rush into the pores of the yoga mat. Finally, use a damp cloth to wipe off the stains, remove more severe dirt, and place it in a cool place to slowly let the yoga mat air dry naturally.

Not allowed to bask in the sun

Most yoga mats are made by using rubber processed materials as a base for mass molding to increase skin friendliness and match the stretchability during exercise. Therefore, if left exposed to sunlight for a long time, it can easily cause the yoga mat to become brittle and hard, making it prone to cracking or gradually becoming mottled and peeling during future use, greatly reducing its lifespan.

Yoga can improve people's psychology, physiology, spirit, and emotions. A yoga mat is essential for doing yoga, so the cleanliness of the mat is very important. How to properly clean yoga mats?
When using natural rubber yoga mats, special attention should be paid when using detergents, and acid or alkali containing detergents should not be used for cleaning.
TPE, EVA, NBR, PVC yoga mats can be diluted with a small amount of mild detergent or light soapy water.

Regardless of the material of the yoga mat, the cleaning steps are as follows:

1. Prepare a basin of water and a clean towel. If detergent is used, add the detergent to the water and stir evenly. Be careful not to use too much detergent to avoid damaging the yoga mat.
2. Soak a clean towel in water and wring it as dry as possible, as the more dry it is, the less detergent will remain on the yoga mat.
3. Gently wipe all corners of the yoga mat with a wrung out towel to ensure that all dirt is thoroughly cleaned. Wipe the front of the yoga mat first, and then the back, in an orderly manner.
4. Pour out the water containing detergent and wash the basin with clean water to avoid residual detergent on the basin. Then replace with clean water, repeat the second and third steps above, clean the remaining detergent on the yoga mat, and then wipe off the water.
After the cleaning work is completed, place the yoga mat in a well ventilated and dry yard to dry, and be careful not to expose it to direct sunlight to prevent it from cracking due to the inability to withstand high temperatures.
6. Put the cleaned yoga mat into a yoga strap or bag for storage. It is recommended to clean yoga mats regularly to prevent bacterial growth and harm to health.
