On the court, the difference between male and female athletes is more than just being "smaller" or having "longer hair."
For half a century from 1921 to 1971, the Football Association (FA), which governs football in England, banned women from playing on FA grounds. “This sport,” it argued, “is deeply unsuitable for women.”
Tell that to the fans. This year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will have the final between Spain and defending champion England on August 20. So far, more than 1.8 million tickets have been sold, breaking the 2015 Women's World Cup Canada record of 1.3 million. Television audiences may be double the previous record of 1 billion. The level of competition has improved across the board.
Getting women's football to be taken seriously has, so far, meant fighting to make it equal to men's football. It still has a long way to go in terms of funding and publicity. Although the women's team's prize money has more than tripled since the last World Cup (and more than tripled from the previous edition), it is still only 25% of what the men's team earns. The wage gap at the club is even more profound. One reason is that women's sports will account for just 13% of TV sports coverage in the UK in 2022 and just 5% in the US in 2019. (Without television broadcasts, there is no advertising revenue)
But on the pitch, football is absolutely equal. Women and men play on the same size field, with the same size football and by the same rules. In sports, this kind of equality isn't always a good idea.
Feminists have long argued, and rightly so, that women are not men with long hair. The rash assumption that men are the “default human” means that everything from drugs and smartphones to bulletproof vests and airbags are designed in ways that are inconvenient or even dangerous for female users.
A similar argument applies to sports – which, ironically, is the very reason women’s sports exist as a separate category. On average, women are smaller than men, even among elite athletes. One paper calculated that their court ratio would be two-thirds of what it is now. The goal will be slightly smaller. The ball will also be smaller and lighter. The researchers point out that expecting women and men to play on the same size courts effectively means asking them to play a different sport than men. The difficulty is even greater.
To be sure, such a change would be controversial. When World Rugby, rugby union's international governing body, decided to test a ball designed specifically for women's smaller hands, players were divided. Some welcomed the removal of what they saw as a disadvantage. Others worry that any semblance of concession risks slowly damaging the prestige of the women's program.
This risk is real, but it may be exaggerated. Many other sports accommodate the physiological differences between the sexes. In track and field, the women's hurdles are lower and the discus is lighter. Basketball uses smaller balls; volleyball has a lower net. In sports, men and women should be treated equally as they are in other industries. But they are biologically different, and it does no one any good to pretend they are the same.
